Medical Training; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
From 19.12.2016 to
14.01.2017 at dermatology department. Everyone at
the dermatology department was helpful and
pleasant. Schedule was flexible according to my
learning needs. |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
Easy transportation using
online cabs. Rush hour is busy traffic. |
EAIMS Hosting Team; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
EAIMS team was very
supportive and quick to respond when I needed
help. It was great meeting them and I hope our
paths cross again. |
Overall Evaluation: |
Excellent rotation! I would
highly recommend it to any learner looking for
exposure to dermatology. |

Medical Training; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
From 07.03.2016 to
20.03.2017 at Obstetrics and Gynecology
department. The doctors were all very friendly and
tried to explain as much as they could when I did
not understand the patients. And I could ask them
whenever I had a question. |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
I lived at my aunts place,
so that she showed me the city and other parts of
Egypt. You have the Pyramids of course but there
are many other places you have to see in Cairo
like the mosques and the bazaar ... |
EAIMS Hosting Team; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
The EAIMS Team was very nice
and helpful and whenever I had a problem I could
contact them and ask for help. |
Overall Evaluation: |
My time in Kasr El Aini
Cairo University Hospital was very nice. I learned
a lot about the Egyptian culture and working in a
hospital with three times the number of patients a
day than in German hospitals. I could only
recommend to do an internship in Egypt especially
in Kasr El Aini hosptial. The People there are all
very friendly and helpful if you have any
problems. Also traveling to other parts of Egypt
is very nice, like Luxor or Alexandria. It is
totally different to Cairo and you should go there
if you have the time to get there. |

Medical Training; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
From 02.02.2015 to
13.02.2015 at ER and general surgery department,
then from 16.02.2015 to 27.02.2015 at Gynecology
and Obstetrics department - Kasr Alaini Medical
Faculty – Cairo University. The ER and general
surgery Part: to be honest: I expected it to be
better than it was; although EAIMS Team has spoken
several times with the manager of the ER they
didn't allow us to join at the beginning. There
were some good "Teachers" too, but many of the
doctors where really stressed and tired. Many
times they advised us to wait for 5 minutes,
instead of these 5 min we often had to wait for
half an hour or more. They even didn't let me
scrub because they said they need a
permission from me that I am "allowed" to do
it?!?! So in summary I don't feel like having
learned a lot in the first 2 weeks. The Gynecology
part: Start at Monday; First time joining the
doctors: Wednesday. It was a good time there. Nice
stuff. Helpful experience. Finally the highlight
were the last few days when I decided on my own to
join a kind Anesthetist. He let me do everything I
wanted. |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
Besides the medical training
EAIMS Team took us to really nice trips outside of
downtown. |
EAIMS Hosting Team; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
EAIMS Team was really nice
and helpful. They introduced us in a great way in
the different departments.
Thank you for everything :) |
Overall Evaluation: |
I had really struggles with
the Egyptian way: Sometimes unorganized, kind of
slow especially during the time in ER and general
surgery. I would have been nice to know about the
entrance troubles in the ER previously EAIMS Team
did their job perfectly :) |

Medical Training; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
From 11.08.2014 to
05.09.2014 at Gynecology and Obstetrics department
of Kasr Alaini Medical Faculty. Pros: the rotation
system made me see a lot in this field, so there
was a day gynecology, obstetrics, operation, stuff
meeting and casualties; some doctors tried to
explain in English although the time was very
limited and it was a lot to do. Cons: some doctors
make you feel not wanted there but this you can
find at any hospital I guess; hospital hygiene.
Advices: if you can speak and understand Arabic it
will help you a lot. |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
I was at a church dorm, it
was safe and nice; I had some friends who did a
lot of outings with me which I would not able to
do alone so advice is to know someone. |
EAIMS Hosting Team; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
EAIMS Team was very friendly
and tried hard to make me feel comfortable. Due to
a misunderstanding, I couldn't enjoy my first two
weeks that much. |
Overall Evaluation: |
Egypt is a great country
with lots of things to explore and a lot of fun
stuff to do. Definitely an unforgettable
experience! |

Medical Training; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
From August 2013 to April
2014 at different departments of Kasr Alaini
Medical Faculty. Pros: very friendly doctors, I
had a lot of fun working with them. Always ready
to help and explain. Cons: doctors are overworked,
they don't have enough time for the patients which
also leads to an insufficient diagnosis and
therapy of the patients. There is no understanding
of hygienic importance, not even during the
operations. |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
I did not attend any outings
organized by the EAIMS. |
EAIMS Hosting Team; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
Meeting up with the
responsible people of EAIMS was chaotic at the
beginning but it ended up well. A very friendly,
helpful and competent team. |
Overall Evaluation: |
I really loved my stay in
Egypt. It is very interesting to see how the
medical system works outside of Europe. It is
interesting to experience the so called "organized
chaos" in every aspect of Egypt. It was not always
easy to fight my way through this chaos but there
were always many people who were gladly there to
help, in every aspect. I can recommend a stay at
Kasr Alaini hospital to those who want to
experience (medical) adventures along with fun and
amazing people. Thank you very much, dear EAIMS-Team.
I really appreciate your efforts! |

Medical Training; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
From 1.12.2012 to 31.1.2013
in Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of Kasr El
Aini. Pros: Integration in the daily activities of
the doctors, and following the weekly rotation of
one group (operation, outdoor clinic, emergency);
one to one teaching; possibility of practice
(assistance in operations, examination of pregnant
patients, assistance in natural deliveries,
history taking and examination of outdoor
patients...). Cons: Poor hospital infrastructure
compared to European hospitals standards.
Advices: Arabic language is very useful. 24h
Emergency shift is where I learned and did the
most! Recommendable!! |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
Board: Egyptair. Good
flight, both ways. Lodging: I lived during the two
months in the Nile Garden Hotel, near the Kasr el
Aini. Very good service, recommendable. Outings:
The outings with the EAIMS group were rare but
really nice (Cairo tower, Lunch at a Mall). My
advice for the touristic outings like the
pyramids, khan el khalili, museums... is to be
accompanied by local people in order to avoid too
high prices and harassment... |
EAIMS Hosting Team; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
Very good website, good
advices. The introduction the first day was
excellent. Very friendly, helpful and welcoming
team. Beautiful certificate in the end of
training!
Cons:
None.
Advices: Better information about the responsible
persons for signature and help to attain them in
the end of the training |
Overall Evaluation: |
It was an excellent, unique
and unforgettable journey and medical training,
which was only possible thanks to EAIMS, to their
great work, their friendly advices and the clear
website that lead me through the different steps,
until the impossible became possible! Thanks a
lot! |

Medical Training; Pros, Cons & Advices:

I attended 2 weeks in
pediatrics and 2 weeks in OBGYN. Pediatrics: There
was a lot to see and our supervisor was very
interested in showing us around and sharing his
knowledge with us. Thus, it was a pity he didn't
have that much time for us besides his other
duties. OBGYN: We followed a team of doctors doing
their weekly rotation in the different wards,
outpatients departments and ORs. Also here, there
was a lot to see and learn and almost every doctor
was willing to give us some explanations,
although we almost always had to ask for it. The
problem here was that nobody felt really
responsible for us, wherefore we always had to
search for someone to show or explain us
something. |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
I travelled together with
my friend with Lufthansa from Munich directly to
Kairo and the same backwards. We booked the
flight about 3 months earlier. We stayed at Manial
Youth Hostel, as recommended by EAIMS. It was
okay for the 4 weeks we needed it although I would
not lodge there again. The best part about Manial
Youth Hostel is its closeness to the hospital
(really just about 5 to 10 minutes walk) and that
it is directly besides the Nile. But the big part
of the stuff was rude to us and most of the time
we had the feeling that we were not
really welcome. But there are a lot of other
lodging-possibilities in Kairo, you just have to
open a travel guide...
I would advise
anyone who is going to Egypt to plan enough time
to travel the country. We spend 2 weeks after our
stay in Kairo (which itself was great and provided
some nice trips i.e. to Alexandria and Saqqara)
traveling to Luxor, Aswan and Dahab. It was great
to see all this very different sides of Egypt and
to have time to enjoy them. |
EAIMS Hosting Team; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
Dr. Mona and Dr. Mahmoud
were really nice and helpful. They were there when
we had any problems or questions and tried to
help as good as they could. It was also great to
meet them and the other exchange-students once a
week and to chat about our experiences. Also, Dr.
Mona organized a trip to the Red Sea for us,
which ended up to be one of the most beautiful
memories about my stay in Egypt. As a suggestion,
there could maybe be organized some more meetings
or events for/with the exchange-students. |
Overall Evaluation: |
EAIMS is a great program and
provided my friend and me a unique opportunity to
go to a new country, learn about its culture and
people and about its medical system. Thank you a
lot for this, I will never forget about my time in
Kairo! |

My training was in
Cardiology Department. I spent most of the time in
the ward, where the doctors were very friendly,
helpful and explained everything to me in English.
A little Arabic helps a lot, especially in the
direct contact with patients. Apart from the daily
rounds on the ward, I was heartily welcomed to
join the cardiac investigations like Echo,
Catherization and Cardiac Surgery. I gained a lot
of understanding about diseases, that we don\'t
see a lot in Germany, about the health system in
Egypt and about the socio-cultural influences in
medicine. |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
I stayed in a shared flat
near the Hospital. |
EAIMS Hosting Team; Pros, Cons & Advices:

The EAIMS Team is so lovely
and helped a lot to make our stay very enjoyable.
The weekly meetings were a good opportunity to
exchange experiences. And the trip to the beach..
amazing!!! |

March and April 2009,
Emergency Room. The doctors and Students working
with us in the ER were really nice. You can see a
lot of traumatized patients, but be aware of the
fact that there is a great number of them dying
inside the ER. A problem for me was the
communication with the patient, but I concentrated
on the unconscious ones ;) There is a great
variety of diseases to see. |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
The Hostel we stayed in was
ok. It is really close to the hospital, right
across the street. Just be aware of the fact that
you will eat pretty much the same everyday. |
EAIMS Hosting Team; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
I loved the EAIMS Team. We
had a great time and you can always reach them and
they will help you no matter what. I really felt
taken care of, and we did some trips together and
went out several times. I really had a great
time!!!!Thank you for that!!! |
Overall Evaluation: |
I can only recommend Cairo
and the hospital!!! You always have somebody who
helps you. I had a great time with the people and
getting to know the country. The hospital I can
recommend too, not only because it was totally
different from what I'm used to in Germany, but
because you get to know different ways of treating
and the mentality of the people that plays a big
part in their medical treatment. |

I spent 4 weeks training in
the pediatric hospital. The doctors at my
department were very nice & they explained to me
the diseases of the children. I saw many cases but
I was the whole time in one department. It would
be good to make a plan in the beginning of the
training to have a look in different
departments. |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:

The hostel was close to the
hospital. The condition of the room was okay but
we had to ask the manager to put the air condition
on every time we entered the room. |

Email:
ocharifu_jnr@yahoo.com |
Medical Training; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
My training was in Pediatric Department from 1
November till 13 December 2008. More interesting
than I had previously imagined. More patients than
in Nigeria, this literally means more to learn of
course. Also a good team of residents and
consultants who in spite of the heavy influx of
patients are ever willing to attend to my
questions. Really a rewarding experience both
academically and socially. My kudos to the doctors
for being that receptive and accommodating. |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
With adequate information on the website for
intending EAIMS students, I had no problem at all
with accommodation. I made a thorough arrangement
for it and it was simply wonderful. Outings were
pretty nice too. Thanks to adequate info from
EAIMS. |
EAIMS Hosting Team; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
They did their best within their limits to make my
stay comfortable and worth the while it lasted. So
my praises also go to them. |
Overall Evaluation: |
EAIMS is a great initiative; it should be
sustained for the benefit of other medical
students worldwide. But EAIMS management should
organize a more formal forum for interaction
between EAIMS students in Egypt at any given time.

My

My
training was in Tropical Medicine Department,
Medical Faculty, Cairo University, Egypt during
September 2007. Lectures by supervising doctors
were good. I Saw how the medical system work in
another country like Egypt. Sometimes we have
nothing to do or to see when doctors get so busy.
It would be better if there was one
doctor who is especially there for the students. |

My

Medical Faculty, Cairo University, Egypt during
November 2007. I had a lot of doctors who were
willing to teach. There were so many patients with
a variety of cases so it was not difficult to
learn. I got the chance to try out some
procedures. The patients spoke Arabic so I had to
depend on the doctor; second hand explanations to
understand. Training periods could be made to fall
into the same periods as other Egyptian students
so as to enhance friendships. |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
I arranged my own lodging at a nearby hotel in the
Down Town. Lodging was good. It was easily
accessible to the hospital & faculty. Also I enjoyed
outings with other incoming students from Austria. |
EAIMS Hosting Team; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
The EAIMS team was friendly. I had someone I could
always call if I had any problems. Incomings
should be given a map of the tourist attractions
and a list of average costs of taxis and important
daily items. |
Overall Evaluation: |
The training period was enjoyable. I saw lots of
cases that were not common in my home country. It
was a fine blend of academic work and tourist fun. |

Medical Training; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
My training was in Dental & Oral Surgery
Department, Dental Faculty, Cairo University,
Egypt during July 2007. Theatre staff, consultants
and house officers were extremely helpful and
devoted time to making observation of surgery
information. There was general willingness from
staff to maximize our experience. Language
barriers with hands of treatment with patients
could perhaps have been managed slightly better in
certain areas although a larger effort was made by
some parties. Perhaps more prior informative re
schedules, equipment required and contact details
would have been useful. |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
I arranged my own lodging at
friends' house in Nasr City. It was quite away
from the hospital making it not easy to go and
come back daily especially with frequent traffic
jams in Cairo. |
EAIMS Hosting Team; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
The welcome meeting was very useful. EAIMS Team
students were very helpful and friendly. Perhaps
more frequent meetings around the faculty with
representatives from both dental & medical fields
would be great. |
Overall Evaluation: |
A very worthy experience. |

case. They always asked if we have questions even when
they were busy. We were allowed to examine the
patients and assist in the operations. |

Manial hostel is a very nice
hostel (better as some 3 stars hotels). Very friendly
members. Hostel is very near to the hospital. Very
good atmosphere and very good food in the cafeteria.
There were some problems in the hostel with
registration and the curfew time 2 am also the room
may be little bit small for 3 persons. Wonderful Nile
cruise with Prof. Yosri Abdelmohsen the head of EAIMS
trustees’ board. We had many tours with the groups to
Pyramids and Cairo places.

We had a weekly meeting with

I spent
a month in Obstetrics & Gynecology
Department, Medical Faculty, Cairo University, Egypt.
Doctors were really lovely and approachable, although
they were understandably stressed after 12 hrs in
Labor ward. I enjoyed myself thoroughly but I wished
that I were more able to participate more, although I
understand it was difficult due to language barrier.
Tip: while training at the hospital, try and learn
Arabic in the numerous Arabic school for foreigners.
Even you speak one or two words, the patients
appreciate the effort you're putting in and the
Dr-patient relationship is improved. Advice: on the
first day: find the medical supply shops (over the
bridge) and buy some scrubs and also some clogs AND a
box of gloves if you want to do PV examination. Make
the most of the gynecological and obstetric out
patient clinics to practice your examination skills.
There is some competition with the other medical
students and the local 1st yr Drs, but don't let that
put you off. TIP: freeze a bottle of water and take it
with you to the hospital. You will appreciate it as
the day gets hotter and you're feeling faint while you
are acclimatizing to Egyptian summer. |
Board, Lodging and Outings; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
I didn't stay in the hostel, but
in a rented flat. The organized outing to Islamic,
Coptic Cairo was great fun! managed to see the medical
students organizers of EAIMS and we have become fast
friends. It was great to see these guys as we then
exchanges medical student views and also had a wider
and deeper understanding of Egyptian culture.
IMPORTANT:
bring loads of passport photos. |
EAIMS Hosting Team; Pros, Cons & Advices: |
Well organized, and friendly.
One comment: we got lost on our 1st day to the
hospital: so give clear instructions for the
taxi-driver as we were sent to the new hospital. |

The trips were very well organized, thanks. Manial
hostel was not on the European style with very
strict separation between men and women. So, one

good thing for another time.

About Cairo - Egypt (April 2004) |

Medical Training; Pros, Cons & Advices:
|
|
My training was in Family Medicine Department,
Medical Faculty, Cairo University, Egypt during
April 2004. Through my clerkship in family
medicine; I have gained an understanding of the
impact culture and religion has on healthcare, as
well as health needs in this developing countries.
For example in USA, underserved areas have health
problems related to lack of education, medical
resources and access to heath care. Fundamentally,
these are problems for every indigent population.
I was fascinated by the role of religion and
culture played on the health education and
delivery.
I was fortunate to rotate through different
specialties in Cairo University hospital. Among
them are Dermatology, Neurosurgery, General
Surgery, orthopedics, Anesthesia, Gynecology,
Psychiatry and General Medicine. I found the
observational and hands-on experience very
rewarding as I was able to see cases of extreme
proportion. I found the number of lecture to be a
bit excessive, as many of the topics can be
reviewed on my own time. I recommend that
international students experience the amazing
pathology in Cairo University hospital by
observing as many cases as possible rather than
spending too much time in lectures. I did enjoy
the case presentations offered here, especially
the idea of bringing live cases and patients to
lectures. This allows students and residents to
witness the pathology visually without having to
refer to the book.
The condition of the hospital was better than I
expected. The patients were seen without any
order. They all expected care simultaneously
without waiting to their turn. I feel this is a
minor problem, but it can make their delivery more
pleasant. I found the attitudes of some physicians
to be a bit condescending towards the patients. My
understanding is that the patients are considered
to be “ignorant”. I find this unacceptable because
they are human beings and their lack of education
should not limit their health care. I hope that in
the future there is a change towards this
attitude.
